Past
The original studios at Haarlem Mill were set up in 2016 by two Wirksworth-based fine artists, who were frustrated at having to commute to Nottingham to find affordable and inspiring studio spaces. Over the next three years, three floors of the historic mill were transformed into a creative catalyst bringing artists, makers and creatives into Wirksworth ands placed Haarlem Artspace firmly on the national and international cultural map.

Present
Haarlem Studios CIC was etsbalished in 2022 to take over the day-to-day management of the studios and to allow Haarlem Artspace to focus on developing a year round program of contemprary art exhibitions as well as artist residencies.
As well as providing creative studios we work hard to provide a vibrant community, where creative pratitioners and artists can share ideas, practice or opportunities.

Future
We’re always looking to develop the potential of the creative industries and to better support artistic practice within the region, as we see it not only as a key driver for a suastainable rural economy, but a fundemental foundation on which cultural balance, wellness and community cohesion can be built.
We believe the creative community we have created here at Haarlem has the potential to help drive the development of the wider area into a Cultural Destination of national note.
In Spring 2024 Haarlem we opened our new permanent shop on the Market Place in Wirksworth to celebrate the creative output of our studio holders as well as to provide a platform to showcase the best of British craft.
